Inaugural Seasonal Tea Club: Winter 2017

Welcome to the first-ever Living Tea Seasonal Tea Club. We’re deeply grateful for your interest and support. Whether you live in a place with dramatic seasonal shifts or more subtle transitions, the cycles of nature influence us all. At Living Tea, we honor the ancient traditions of the Way of Tea—practices rooted in close observation of the natural world and grounded in the belief that aligning with seasonal rhythms can bring greater harmony, awareness, connection, and health.

One of the foundational principles of these traditions is to adjust our lifestyle to the season. One powerful way to live in greater harmony with the changing energies of the year is to drink teas that reflect the qualities of each season. Through this tea club, we offer guidance for living seasonally, along with a carefully curated selection of teas chosen to support balance during this time of year.

While we could say much about each tea, the quiet presence they invite—and the space for reflection they create—speak volumes on their own. Thank you for joining us in this Life of Tea.

Wintertime

Winter is the season of stillness, introspection, and rest. It is the most yin time of the year, when nature enters a period of dormancy. The yang energies of spring and summer create the warm, active conditions for growth, while the dry winds of autumn mark the harvest. By contrast, winter draws us inward. The days are shorter, the landscape quiet and bare. Movement slows, fires are stoked, and life turns inward.

This is a time to reflect on the year that’s passed, to gather our internal resources, and to rest both body and mind. The peace of winter prepares us for the resurgence of energy that comes with spring.

In The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine, an ancient Taoist text on health and harmony, the seasons are described as essential to the rhythm of life. It says:

“Yin provides form. Yang enables growth. Warmth of the spring gives rise to birth, the fire of the summer fuels rapid growth and development, the coolness of autumn matures all and provides harvest, and the coldness of winter forces inactivity and storing. This is the rhythmic change of nature… Man is a microcosm and reflection of Nature.”

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, winter is governed by the water element and corresponds with the Kidneys and Urinary Bladder. This is the time to nourish these organs, which are closely linked to vitality and longevity. Practices that support the kidneys include rest, meditation, gentle movement like qi gong or yoga, acupuncture, and eating warming, deeply nourishing foods like root vegetables, mushrooms, black sesame, and ginger.

Likewise, tea can play an important role in seasonal nourishment. We’ve selected teas for the Winter Collection that are warming, calming, grounding, and tonifying—ideal companions for reflection, stillness, and restoration.

As we move through the cold, quiet days of winter, may your tea practice be a source of warmth and grounding. We hope these teas offer moments of presence, peace, and deep nourishment.

Stay warm, stay well, and thank you for walking this path of tea with us.
